The Manikato Stakes is a MVRC Group 1 Australian Thoroughbred horse race run under Weight for Age conditions, over a distance of 1200 metres at Moonee Valley Racecourse, Melbourne in September.
The race is named after the great race horse Manikato who won this race twice as well as recording 5 consecutive wins in the William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley from 1979 to 1983.
From 1968 to 1983 the race was known as the 'Freeway Stakes' and then in 1984 the race was changed to the Manikato Stakes.
In 2009, the Manikato Stakes moved to the Friday night before the AFL Grand Final, to take place along side the Gr2 Stutt Stakes for three-year-olds.
Manikato was an out and out champion who had 49 career starts for 29 wins and 13 places and he sadly passed away in 1984 after an illness and now lays at rest at the home of many of his greatest wins, Moonee Valley racecourse.
